Join our team at VHS Bhaktapur, a German-Nepali community learning center dedicated to education, intercultural exchange, and supporting young people in Nepal. Our volunteers become part of a small, international team and contribute their ideas, skills, and enthusiasm to our programs.
Living and working in Bhaktapur offers a unique chance to experience Nepal from the inside while making a meaningful contribution to our work.
What Will I Do as a Volunteer?
Volunteers support our team in different ways depending on their interests and skills. A central activity is helping with conversation classes and language learning, giving students the opportunity to practice speaking in a relaxed and informal setting.
Beyond the classroom, volunteers often help organize cultural programs and special events, contributing ideas and helping bring people together. There are also opportunities to support administrative and creative tasks, such as maintaining the website, contributing to social media, or helping develop new materials for our courses.
Who can volunteer?
Everyone is welcome. We always find meaningful ways for volunteers to contribute based on their interests and abilities.
In particular, we appreciate German speakers who can support our German language programs and help students practice real conversations. But even if your background is different, there are many ways to become involved.
Curiosity, openness, and the willingness to engage with people from different cultures are the most important qualities.
When can I start and how long should I stay?
You can start your volunteering period at a time that suits you. However, it is helpful to know that Nepal’s festive season takes place in October and November. During this time the country becomes very lively, and schedules may change.
If you are comfortable arriving independently and exploring on your own, starting during this time can be a wonderful cultural experience. If you prefer more support during your first weeks, we recommend arriving before early September or after the festive season.
The minimum recommended stay is two months, plus some time if you would like to travel. Longer stays are also possible. For example, volunteers starting in August can stay up to ten months, working until May and traveling during breaks.
How can I apply?
Applying is simple.
Please send us a short email introducing yourself and telling us a little about your background, interests, and how long you would like to stay.
We will then get in touch with you to discuss the next steps and answer any questions you may have.
What arrangements are made for volunteers?
Volunteers organize and pay for their own flights to Nepal.
Once you arrive, we will pick you up from the airport and help you settle in. During the first days we provide orientation and introduce you to the city and our work.
We can help arrange accommodation in a host family or a shared apartment. The cost of accommodation is covered by the volunteer.
During working days, volunteers enjoy breakfast, lunch, coffee, and tea at the office free of charge, making it easy to connect with colleagues and students throughout the day.
